Water and Sanitation Program

PEO in its health program strategy put much emphasis on the issue of inculcating the proper knowledge attitude and practice of water and sanitation. Bangladesh is being a land of water. However, the water is boon and as well as bane for the people specially the poor. The poor cannot afford to install a tube well in their own court yard. They have to collect water from far off. Thus poor mostly restrict their safe water use in drinking water use only. For other use say, hand washing, washing of pots and pans, for washing hands after cleaning bottom of children, they use water from a small pool beside their house. They wash their cooking utensils, clothing, takes bath in the same water. Thus the water is major source of water bourn diseases. PEO workers would very diligently motivate people to use safe water for all purposes. Thus the predominant factor for ailment among the poor is thus addressed by PEO. PEO in association and also with support form NGO forum for Drinking water and Sanitation had installed tube wells and also sold at subsidized rate low cost Water seal latrines. For installation of a tube well PEO involved the community in taking decision regarding the proper location of the tube well. PEO supplies tube wells on cost sharing basis and no service charge is levied on the loan for tube wells. They have also shared a part of the cost of installation. With the installation of the tube wells, people are able to practice the awareness they had acquired through motivation sessions. The tube wells which were given credit the community shared the installment payments. PEO also conducts water and Sanitation campaign in the local schools too. The PEO trainers arrange with the school management a two hour session to impart Safe water and sanitation messages to the students. The purpose was to sensitize the students whose parents are mostly illiterate or not sufficiently motivated to change their habits.
